The Chilean Economy Minister praised the technological milestone achieved by SONDA’s new Kudos Tier IV data center

Mr. José Ramón Valente visited this project with modern infrastructure that will be fully operational in January 2020. It will be the first data center built by an IT services company in Latin America.

The Economy Minister, Mr. José Ramón Valente, described the new Kudos Tier IV data center being built by SONDA in Quilicura, Santiago as “A transcendental milestone that puts Chile at the technological forefront of Latin America and positions the country as an active participant in Digital Transformation.”

The Minister made these statements during a tour together with SONDA executives, during which found he was shown how well the project is progressing. These modern facilities are expected to become operational by the end of this year.

The Minister stated that “Many times we have heard President Piñera say that Chile should be involved in the Fourth Industrial Revolution, and SONDA’s Tier IV data center project forms an essential component of the infrastructure we need for Chile to participate in this new digital world, which is growing very rapidly and competitively.”

He added “It is an honor to be here and learn about this Chilean company’s project, which competes side by side with top international companies, and is winning market share. It has a strategic perspective, which believes that Chile is progressing, growing and providing great investment conditions. We cannot focus solely on figures covering one to three months, but must take a long term view, which SONDA has already achieved by committing significant financial resources to this and other outstanding investments.”

Last December SONDA officially received the Tier IV design certification for its new Kudos data center, located next to its Tier III data center in Quilicura. This quality certification means that Kudos is the first data center built an IT services company in Chile and Latin America that has been designed from the ground up to meet the most demanding international standards in compliance with the Tier IV regulations.

Mr. Raul Sapunar, General Manager of SONDA Chile, said that “SONDA is a leader in information technologies and services, with offices in 10 Latin American countries, over 16,000 employees and 5,000 customers throughout the region. The design of this new Tier IV data center has been certificated by the Uptime Institute, and it will be fully operational in January next year. This is not only a milestone that puts Chile in an technological leadership position in the region, but also strengthens our confidence in national institutions and in the country’s long term strategic growth.”

The Data Center and Cloud Services Director at SONDA Chile, Ms. Heidy Bauer, highlighted the thoroughness of this process. “We have precisely and rigorously complied with the standards and new practices that are required to fulfill the Tier IV standard. We have been working on this process for over a year, and this successful result demonstrates the commitment and professionalism dedicated to ensuring that its design, construction and operation will fully comply with all the parameters required by the Uptime Institute,” she said.

SONDA’s new Kudos Tier IV data center will have a flexible design and its final 4,000 m2 will be built in 4 phases, with 16 meeting rooms and 12 MW. The investment for the first phase will be US$ 40 million, which will be operational by next January. While the total project will require US$ 130 million.

The Tier IV certification was awarded by the Uptime Institute and guarantees fault tolerance, continual availability and efficiency, to safely manage the huge volumes of information and data currently being generated by strategic businesses within the competitive world economy.

This strengthens SONDA’s position as the ideal business partner for companies in the region who need to efficiently manage their Digital transformation processes and evolve their business models using high-availability, secure and mission critical services.

Kudos is the Greek word to recognize and praise a tremendous achievement, and the English language has adopted it to celebrate a job well done or an exceptional achievement. Therefore, the Quilicura 2 data center, or Q2, has been named Kudos, to commemorate this great technological event for the region.

Only 47 companies worldwide (including four in Latin America) have certified Tier IV compliance for the design and construction of their data centers. Only twelve companies within this small group also have certified operational compliance, as will SONDA. This requires compliance with a large number of demands and limiting situations, in order to certify fault tolerance.

The current disruptive scenario facing all the strategic sectors of the economy is underpinned by new information technologies and paradigms such as IoT, Big Data, Blockchain, Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning, Hybrid Cloud and XaaS (all “as a Service”). SONDA’s Kudos Tier IV data center will make a fundamental contribution to implementing these technologies within its customers’ strategic transformation and modernization processes, by delivering the efficiency, security and availability demanded for all mission-critical operations.
