Modern cities require electronic collection systems for their public transport services, which cover buses, underground and overground trains.
These systems facilitate major improvements in passenger safety and comfort, and foster the development of more complex transport systems. They integrate services and transport modes, so permitting public transport authorities to design the most appropriate tariff structure.
SONDA has implemented such a system in Chile, called the Bip! Card. It incorporates card-readers on buses, communication systems to download this data, central clearing systems and a commercial network of point of sale equipment for recharging cards that are linked to customer payment systems. Also, the required supporting applications, such as a claim system, systems for recharging cards over the web, self-help services and connections to on-line banking, credit card payment services and other payment methods.
